You want to connect to a wireless network and you can't figure out how to get the Network Manager icon to appear on the GNOME Panel. How frustrating.

Don't worry, here's how you can sort it out.

You have to make sure that

1. Network Manager service is started and
2. You have enabled the Network Manager Applet

Below are the steps you need to follow to get Network Manger icon to appear on the GNOME Panel

Step 1: Install Network Manager if not done already
yum install NetworkManager
 
Step 2: Start the Network Manager service
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start

To start the Network Manager Service automatically when your computer starts type ntsysv on the terminal and select Network Manager. You can also configure the start-up service from the System>Administration>Services menu. We already noted it when

Step 3: Enable Network Manager Applet
Click System>Preferences>Personal>Sessions
Put a check mark next to Network Manager(Network Manager Applet) by clicking it 
Click Close
